A live Northern Soul music show featuring an 11-piece band and four vocalists, drawing on over 30 iconic tracks from the genre.
Northern Live bring Do I Love You! to the Grand Opera House on Tuesday 15 September, a night dedicated to Northern Soul. If you've never come across it, Northern Soul was the underground movement that defined a generation across Northern England and later the whole UK. It started on the dancefloors of Manchester, Blackpool, Wigan and other Northern towns, born from the North's love of lesser-known American soul music. From there it grew into its own thing, inspiring a whole culture of fashion, dance and new music, with British artists like Soft Cell, Moloko and Fatboy Slim nodding to it later on.
On stage, Northern Live put that sound in the room with an eleven-piece band and four vocalists. They draw on more than thirty iconic tracks from the era, including Frank Wilson's 'Do I Love You (Indeed I Do)' and Gloria Jones' 'Tainted Love'. With fifteen musicians on stage, it's a full-band recreation of the soul sound rather than a DJ set, so you'll hear the brass and the rhythm section playing those records live.

The show takes the whole movement from its roots in the North's dancehalls through to the records that kept it going. It's as much about the history of the scene as it is about the music itself, so it works whether you're someone who remembers the original nights or you've just heard the name. Tickets start from £43, and the show runs at the Grand Opera House on Clifford and Cumberland Street.
