Nina Gilligan brings her stand-up show Lemoncake to Theatre@41 on Sunday 27 September. It's a solo hour from a comedian who's been picking up a fair bit of momentum lately: she was named 'Comedians' Comedian' in 2025 and took home the Mercury award from the Chortle Club Comic.
Lemoncake is described as a warm, sharp, and self-aware look at what it means to be a middle-aged woman. The whole thing kicks off with a lemon cake—or rather, an incident involving one—that leaves her unable to operate heavy machinery and sends her life into a bit of a tailspin. From there, it's a downward slide into flirting with priests, turning to witchcraft, experimenting with recreational substances, and coming to terms with the empty nest. It's the kind of story that starts with something small and ends up touching on the bigger, messier parts of getting older.
Gilligan's a seasoned performer, and the reviews have been strong. The press has called her a 'phenomenal performer' and 'the clearly articulated voice of a generation'. If you've followed her work, you'll know she doesn't shy away from the awkward or the uncomfortable, and Lemoncake seems to lean right into that, finding the comedy in the moments when things go wrong.
