KMRU

KMRU plays the Sir Jack Lyons Concert Hall on Wednesday 28 October, from 7:30pm to 9:30pm. That's the stage name of Joseph Kamaru, a Nairobi-born, Berlin-based sound artist whose work is built from field recording, noise and sound art. It's a sound art performance rather than a gig in the usual sense, so it's more about listening to the textures he brings together than following a song structure.

Kamaru's career has taken him to some of the biggest rooms for this kind of work. He's performed at the Barbican, Berlin Atonal, CTM, Big Ears, Le Guess Who, PRÉSENCES électronique and DarkMofo, and has exhibited at Ars Electronica, the Art Gallery of NSW, Sharjah and the Venice Architecture Biennale. His discography runs across labels like Editions Mego, Touch, Subtext and Seil Records, as well as his own imprint, OFNOT. His 2020 album Peel was named one of Pitchfork's 100 Best Albums of the 2020s So Far, and he released Kin on Editions Mego earlier this year.

He's a SHAPE artist and received a 2023 Prix Ars Electronica Honorary Mention, and he holds an MA in Sound Studies and Sonic Arts from UdK Berlin. The performance is at the Sir Jack Lyons Concert Hall in Rymer, Heslington, York YO10 5DB, running from 7:30pm to 9:30pm.
