Stand-up comedy show by Jay Rayner marking the publication of his new cookbook, Nights Out in the Kitchen.
Jay Rayner is coming to the Grand Opera House York on Monday 14 September, for a one-night-only show. It's a stand-up comedy set marking the publication of his new cookbook, Nights Out in the Kitchen, which comes out in September 2026.
Rayner is best known as a restaurant critic, and this show draws on more than a quarter of a century of reviewing. He'll be talking through his own recipes, and the night takes him into the kind of territory he's built a career on: what the secret to a great dinner party is, whether a restaurant critic is just a bit of a scumbag, the best thing to have on toast, and whether you can braise spaghetti. It's a mix of food talk and the sort of wit he's known for, with the new book as the starting point.
Nights Out in the Kitchen is the sequel to his first cookbook, Nights Out At Home, so if you've got that one on your shelf, this is the follow-up. The show runs for one hour and 50 minutes, including an interval, and the age guidance is 12+.

The Grand Opera House is on Cumberland Street (YO1 9SW), and it's been bringing West End theatre, comedy, variety and musicals to York since 1902. Over the years it's hosted the likes of Dame Judi Dench, Sir Ian McKellen, Charlie Chaplin, Morecombe & Wise and Laurel & Hardy. The show starts at 19:30 on Monday 14 September, and top-priced tickets come with a signed hardback copy of the cookbook.
