Gilbert O'Sullivan

Gilbert O'Sullivan plays the Grand Opera House on Tuesday 22 September, his only York date of the run. He'll be joined on stage by guitarist Bill Shanley.

If you're not familiar with the name, O'Sullivan is one of the UK's most enduring singer-songwriters. His breakthrough came in 1970 with Nothing Rhymed, which set off a run of 16 Top 40 records and six number ones. Among them are the songs that most people recognise: 'Clair', 'Get Down', and 'Alone Again (Naturally)', the last of which spent six weeks at number one in the US and earned him three Grammy nominations. Over the course of his career he's released 20 studio albums and picked up three Ivor Novello Awards, including Songwriter of the Year in 1973.

This is a one-night-only show, so it's the only chance to catch him in York. He's now celebrating more than five decades in music, and this run of concerts is billed as a return to the stage. With Bill Shanley on guitar, the set will be built around O'Sullivan's own songs, the ones that made him a household name across the seventies and beyond.

The concert starts at 7:30 pm at the Grand Opera House, 4 Cumberland St, YO1 9SW, and the box office opens 90 minutes before the performance.
