Repertory Theatre of St. Louis production of Heidi Schreck's Pulitzer Prize finalist play about four generations of women and the U.S. Constitution.
The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis brings What The Constitution Means To Me to the Steve Woolf Studio at the Loretto-Hilton Center on the Webster University campus. It's part of the Steve Woolf Studio Series, which runs within the Rep's 60th Anniversary Diamond Season. The play premiered in 2019 and was a Pulitzer Prize finalist.
Heidi Schreck wrote the play from a personal place: as a teenager, she paid her way through college by winning constitutional debate competitions across the country. The show revisits her fifteen-year-old self to trace the relationship between four generations of women and the U.S. Constitution. It's described as hilarious, witty, and refreshingly honest, and it doesn't stop with the scriptโthe production includes a live debate with local St. Louis high school speech and debate students.
On stage, Michelle Hand plays Heidi, with Joel Moses as the Legionnaire and Riley Carter Adams and Amber Dantzler as the debaters. Nancy Bell directs, and the production is rounded out by Seth Howard on scenic design, Michele Friedman Siler on costumes, Denisse Chavez on lighting, and Mary Robinson on sound. The Rep itself has been around since 1966 and was named a Missouri Historical Theatre in December 2023.
