The St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Jules Buckley, plays new orchestral arrangements of the works of Quincy Jones.
The Music of Quincy Jones comes to Powell Hall on Saturday, May 29, 2027, at 7:30 PM. It's a celebration of Quincy Jones, the composer, producer and cultural force who spent decades shaping the sound of 20th-century music. His reach was wide: he played in jazz orchestras, produced Michael Jackson's Thriller, and scored films like The Wiz, The Italian Job and The Color Purple.
The evening is built around brand-new orchestral arrangements of Jones' quintessential works. Quincy himself said these arrangements retain the "bounce, the bite and the euphoria" of the original recordings, so you're hearing his music reimagined for a full orchestra rather than just a straight-through cover. The program will be led by Grammy Award-winning composer, conductor and arranger Jules Buckley, who's been a close collaborator of Jones for nearly a decade. Buckley has called working with him "absolutely the highest honor."
On the night, Buckley conducts the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, joined by a live band. Additional artists and repertoire will be announced closer to the date. The concert runs about two hours, including intermission, and an after party follows in the lobby, which doesn't require an additional ticket.

It's a long way off, but if you've spent any time with the records he produced or the scores he wrote, this is a good chance to hear them played live by the symphony. Tickets are available through the SLSO.
