Screening of The Exorcist with a talk by Troy Taylor, author of 'The Devil Came to St. Louis', about the 1949 St. Louis exorcism that inspired the film.
Arkadin Cinema & Bar is screening The Exorcist on Sunday, October 25, and it's not just a movie night. Before the film, Troy Taylor will introduce the screening with a talk about the real-life exorcism that inspired the story.
If you've seen the movie, you know the setup: a young girl possessed by a demon, a desperate mother, and the priests brought in to cast it out. But the whole thing started with a real case right here in St. Louis. In 1949, a young boy in the city underwent an exorcism that became one of the most notorious pieces of occult lore in the city's history. That case eventually reached William Peter Blatty, who used it as the basis for his novel The Exorcist, which was then adapted into the 1973 film.
Taylor knows the story from the inside. He's the author of The Devil Came to St. Louis, the book that digs into the actual events of that 1949 exorcism. His talk will bridge the gap between the local history and the movie, so you'll see the film with the real-life St. Louis connection fresh in your mind. It's a good way to watch a movie you've probably seen before, knowing the specific local roots it grew from.
