Screening of Francis Ford Coppola's 1992 version of Bram Stoker's Dracula, with The Simpsons' Treehouse of Horror as a pre-show.
Arkadin Cinema & Bar is screening Bram Stoker's Dracula on Friday, October 30, with a Simpsons Treehouse of Horror pre-show. The main feature is Francis Ford Coppola's 1992 version of the novel, and the night kicks off early with the animated pre-show.
Coppola's Dracula is billed as perhaps the most exuberant, extravagant Dracula ever made, and it earns that description with a heavy reliance on old-school, in-camera cinematic trickery rather than digital effects. Gary Oldman stars as a Count who shifts between urbane and decrepit, while Winona Ryder brings a certain sensuality to Mina. Anthony Hopkins plays Van Helsing with a tongue-in-cheek air, and musician Tom Waits bounces off the walls as Dracula's hapless familiar, Renfield. Keanu Reeves rounds out the main cast as Jonathan Harker. A Seattle Post-Intelligencer review called it "uniquely dreamlike, lushly romantic, highly erotic," and noted that it does for the vampire genre what The Godfather did for the gangster saga.
Before the movie, the night opens with a Simpsons Treehouse of Horror pre-show, which includes "Bart Simpson's Dracula." It's a fitting pairingβa cartoon take on the Count to set the mood before the feature.
