Halloween marathon of Edgar Allan Poe adaptations, including the silent 'The Fall of the House of Usher' and films with Vincent Price, at Arkadin Cinema & Bar.
Arkadin Cinema & Bar is spending Halloween on Edgar Allan Poe. On Saturday, October 31, they're running a Poe-A-Thon that stretches nearly 12 hours, from noon until midnight, with a lineup of Poe adaptations that runs from avant-garde silents to stone-cold classics.
One of the early highlights is Jean Epstein's The Fall of the House of Usher (1928), a silent feature co-written by surrealist Luis Buñuel. It's described as eerie and dreamlike, the kind of thing you'd put in the same conversation as Nosferatu or Vampyr. That's paired with The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar (1936), a twelve-minute silent short about a doctor's hypnosis experiment on a dying man. From there, the day moves into more familiar territory, with three films starring St. Louis horror icon Vincent Price, alongside appearances by Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi. There's also a mystery 'WTF disasterpiece' mixed in, so the mood shifts from high-art surrealism to old-school monster movies and then somewhere completely off the rails.

The whole thing is built around Poe's oeuvre of murder, melancholy, and the macabre—the 'granddaddy of horror' as they put it. The range is wide enough that you can treat it like a marathon or just pick the parts that interest you. You can pop in for a single screening or grab tickets to the whole slate. The day runs from 12 PM on Saturday, October 31, through midnight, with tickets for each screening sold separately at $5 a piece. Arkadin is at 5228 Gravois Ave in St. Louis.
