Season finale concert of the St. Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra, an auditioned student orchestra of around 100 musicians aged 12 to 22, conducted by Samuel Hollister.
The St. Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra closes its season at Powell Hall on Sunday, May 30, 2027, at 3 PM. It's the final concert of their 2026/2027 run, and it's conducted by Samuel Hollister.
If you're not familiar with the group, the Youth Orchestra is the region's premier student ensemble—an auditioned orchestra of around 100 musicians aged 12 to 22, drawn from across the St. Louis area and beyond. It was founded in 1970 by SLSO Conductor Laureate Leonard Slatkin and has since turned out more than 2,000 alumni, many of whom have gone on to make music their career. They tackle challenging orchestral repertoire and learn directly from St. Louis Symphony Orchestra musicians and conductors, including the SLSO's Peer to Peer mentorship program. Since 2024, the YO has been led by Samuel Hollister, who also serves as Assistant Conductor of the SLSO.
This is the third and final concert of their season at Powell Hall. The orchestra also runs a Concerto Competition, which gives one musician the chance to perform a full concerto with the ensemble. For those who want to stay involved, there's a Young Friends membership for people aged 21 to 45. Financial assistance and merit-based scholarships are available to those who demonstrate need or exceptional musicianship.
