Concert of Mozart and Schumann works, Scenes from the Rhine, by the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Kristiina Poska.
The Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra is bringing Mozart and Schumann: Scenes from the Rhine to Powell Hall on Friday, October 16, and Saturday, October 17. It's a program built around European folk music, and it marks the SLSO debut of Estonian conductor Kristiina Poska.
The first half opens with Proteus Pulse, a new piece by fellow Estonian Ülo Krigul that's getting its US premiere here. Poska describes it as musical shapeshifting, and it's the newest thing on the bill. After that, pianist Marie-Ange Nguci takes the solo for Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 21, a sweet and playful work that's one of his most recognizable. The two together set a lighter, more nimble tone before the intermission.
The second half is all Robert Schumann. He's the main feature of the night, and the orchestra is playing his Symphony No. 3, better known as the Rhenish. Schumann wrote it as a reimagining of life along Germany's Rhine River, and the music draws on folk dances, bucolic scenes, and the grandeur of a cathedral. It's the big, atmospheric anchor of the program, and it's the piece that gives the whole concert its title.

If you're staying after the music, there's the After Party, the SLSO's post-concert hang in the lobby. It doesn't require an extra ticket, though the featured artists don't appear there. The Friday performance is at 10:30 AM and runs an hour and 40 minutes, including intermission; the Saturday show is at 7:30 PM. Tickets run from $27 to $159.
