Brass trio concert by the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra at The Sheldon, featuring world premieres and classic repertoire.
Radiance comes to The Sheldon on Thursday, November 19, a chamber-music program put together by two St. Louis Symphony Orchestra musicians, trumpet player Steven Franklin and trombonist Jonathan Randazzo. They're bringing together trumpet, trombone, and piano for a mix of new work and older repertoire, and the evening is sponsored by the Sinquefield Charitable Foundation and welcomed by Classic 107.3.
The program leans heavily on the new. There are two world premieres: a piece by SLSO keyboardist Peter Henderson, who holds the Principal Florence G. and Morton J. May Chair, and in the shadow of a reflection by Mizzou composer Dean Wibe, which was commissioned by the SLSO. Those sit alongside Jacques Castérède's Concertino, Juraj Filas's Sonata, and Joseph Turrin's Fandango. Franklin also plays Allegro agitato, ma non troppo from his own Sonata.
On stage, the trio is Steven Franklin on trumpet, Jonathan Randazzo on trombone, and Peter Henderson on piano. Franklin and Randazzo curated the program themselves, and Henderson is the same keyboardist who wrote one of the night's premieres. It's a small group drawn from the orchestra, playing in a chamber setting rather than with the full ensemble.
