Chamber music by contemporary composers with African influences, curated by Christopher Stark, performed by the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra in the galleries of the Pulitzer Arts Foundation.
The St. Louis Symphony Orchestra is bringing chamber music into the galleries of the Pulitzer Arts Foundation on Tuesday, April 13, and Wednesday, April 14, 2027. It's part of their Live at the Pulitzer series, which takes the orchestra out of the concert hall and puts it right in the middle of the museum's galleries.
The program is curated by composer Christopher Stark, and it centers on the influence of Africa on contemporary classical music. He's paired piano works by two world-renowned composers with St. Louis roots, Fred Onovwerosuoke and Olly Wilson, with woodwind quintet duos by GyΓΆrgy Ligeti and Shawn Okpebholo. The two halves bring together different voices and perspectives to trace the connections between heritage, rhythm, and contemporary expression.
Since the music is played in the galleries rather than on a stage, it changes the whole experience. You're not sitting in a row of seats facing a podium; you're in the same room as the musicians, with the art around you. The program itself moves between the piano and the woodwind quintet, so you'll hear a variety of textures across the two nights.
