The St. Louis Symphony Orchestra performs adventurous chamber music by contemporary composers in the galleries of the Pulitzer Arts Foundation, curated by Christopher Stark.
The St. Louis Symphony Orchestra is playing in the galleries of the Pulitzer Arts Foundation on Tuesday, January 26, 2027. The concert is titled Blood Orange, and the program is curated by composer Christopher Stark. It's a chamber music set, so rather than the full orchestra you'd see at Powell Hall, it's a smaller group playing contemporary works in the middle of the museum galleries.
The program brings together several living composers. Sarah Kirkland Snider contributes Thread and Fray, and Christopher Theofanidis performs Aria. Jonny Greenwood is represented by a suite from There Will Be Blood, the score he wrote for the Paul Thomas Anderson film. Sarah Gibson contributes Carry, and Caroline Shaw rounds things out with two pieces, Valencia and Blueprint. It's a lineup of adventurous chamber music from composers working today, and since Stark curated it, the pieces are tied together by a single vision rather than just being a random collection.
The timing is worth noting: the concert falls during the final week of the exhibition Olga de Amaral: Weaving the Infinite. The performance is presented alongside the show, so you can experience the exhibition and the music in the same visit. The SLSO is playing in the galleries themselves, not a separate theater, which puts the musicians right among the art.
