Contralto LA Young and her band Soul Society sing Phyllis Hyman's songbook live in a tribute show at City Winery.
LA Young brings her tribute to Phyllis Hyman to City Winery St. Louis on Thursday, November 5, performing with her band Soul Society. It's a full-band show, and the set focuses on Hyman's songbook—the hits and the deep cuts—sung in the range they were written for. Young is a contralto, and she shares the same rare, low, dark-toned vocal range that defined Hyman's work, so she's singing these songs in their original register rather than rearranging them for a different voice. Every arrangement is performed live, with nothing on tape.
This isn't an impersonation. Young describes it as a tribute production, not affiliated with or endorsed by the Estate of Phyllis Hyman, and the focus is on the music rather than a character. She's spent the last three years performing this material, including three sold-out nights at the Anacostia Playhouse, and this is one of the dates taking the show beyond the capital. Outside of this project, she's shared the Jazz Legacy Foundation Gala stage with leading jazz and soul performers and was a three-category nominee at the 2018 Maryland Music Awards.
