Opera Theatre of Saint Louis production of Verdi's La traviata, sung in English with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra.
Opera Theatre of Saint Louis brings Verdi's La traviata to the Loretto-Hilton Center at Webster University starting May 29, 2027. It's one of the most enduring love stories in opera—a sweeping tragedy that pairs some of Verdi's most unforgettable melodies with a story of love found and sacrificed. The plot follows Violetta, Paris' most celebrated courtesan, who risks her reputation and her future to choose a life of real love with the young Alfredo Germont, caught between love and expectation.
This production is sung in English, with English captions projected, and it's performed with members of the Grammy Award-winning St. Louis Symphony Orchestra. Susanne Burgess takes the lead as Violetta Valéry, with Daniel Luis Espinal as Alfredo Germont and Troy Cook as Giorgio Germont. Daniela Candillari conducts and Bruno Ravella stages the production.
La traviata is part of the company's 2027 Festival Season, curated by Artistic Director Patricia Racette. This particular production also marks the 50th year of collaboration between the company and the symphony—a partnership that has spanned 52 years and seen 46 world premieres and 27 American premieres.
