The St. Louis Symphony Orchestra presents Ravel and Poulenc with the St. Louis Symphony Chorus and St. Louis Children's Choirs, conducted by Stéphane Denève.
Stéphane Denève leads the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra in Ravel and Poulenc - Charm and Wonder at Powell Hall on Friday, February 12, and Saturday, February 13, 2027. Both performances start at 7:30 PM and run about an hour and 45 minutes, including intermission.
The program pairs two French classics. First is Francis Poulenc's Gloria, one of his most celebrated works, performed with soprano Sarah Aristidou and the St. Louis Symphony Chorus under director Erin Freeman. Then comes Maurice Ravel's L'enfant et les sortilèges, an imaginative opera in which clocks, chairs, and teacups come to life, featuring mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard and the St. Louis Children's Choirs under artistic director Dr. Alyson Moore.
Denève has a personal connection to the Ravel: he calls it a piece extremely dear to his heart and lists it among his desert island selections. He dedicates the Poulenc to the chorus and its new chorusmaster. The concerts are part of the orchestra's 147th season, which also marks the 50th anniversary of the St. Louis Symphony Chorus. The season includes a week with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra led by Wynton Marsalis.
