Dominique Morisseau's music-infused drama about the 1967 Detroit uprising, directed by Brian Marable and produced by Detroit Public Theatre.
Detroit '67 opens at The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis on February 3, 2027, running through February 21 on the mainstage at the Loretto-Hilton Center. It's a production from the Detroit Public Theatre, presented by The Rep.
Written by Dominique Morisseau, the play is set in 1967 Detroit and follows siblings Chelle and Lank, who run a basement after-hours joint while the Motown scene smolders and tensions rise around them. It's a music-infused drama, and that's not just a description of the moodβthe music drives the beat of the story, and the soundtrack of the 1960s runs right through it. The play won the Edward M. Kennedy Prize for Drama, and it's being presented here on the 60th anniversary of the Detroit uprising.
Brian Marable directs, with Michelle Hand, Heidi Joel Moses, The Legionnaire Riley Carter-Adams, and ensemble Amber Dantzler in the cast. If Morisseau's name sounds familiar, it's because her play Confederates previously played at The Rep, so this is a return for her work on the same stage.
