Josh Garrels plays The Old Rock House on South 7th Street with special guest Taylor Armstrong.
Josh Garrels plays The Old Rock House on Friday, October 23, as part of his Ancient Doors Tour. He's not alone for this one: Taylor Armstrong opens the night.
If you're not familiar with Garrels, his music is built on introspective lyrics and a sound that pulls from a few different places at once—pastoral indie folk on one end, hip-hop on the other. He's been at this for a long time. Born in 1980 in South Bend, Indiana, he spent his teens in punk bands before coming to the Christian faith, which became a major thread in his songwriting. He co-founded Small Voice Records, the label that put out Jacaranda in 2008, and spent years releasing self-produced, home-recorded albums like Stonetree (2002), Underquiet (2003), and Over Oceans (2006). In 2011, he put out the double album Love & War & the Sea in Between, a record he's called a career milestone. In 2015, Home landed him on the Billboard 200.
Beyond the albums, he's scored several films and placed songs on TV shows like CBS's The Ghost Whisperer and ESPN's Outside the Lines. The Ancient Doors Tour brings that catalog to the stage, with Taylor Armstrong handling the opening slot.
