Grammy-winning jazz guitarist John Scofield performs his fusion-groove project 'Electrospective' with Oteil Burbridge, Larry Goldings and Adam Deitch.
John Scofield brings his Electrospective set to The Sheldon on Tuesday, October 20, with Oteil Burbridge on bass, Larry Goldings on keyboards, and Adam Deitch on drums. It's a quartet that pulls from different eras of Scofield's career, and the set is built around the fusion-groove years he spent moving away from straight-ahead jazz.
Scofield's been at this for over five decades. He recorded with Charles Mingus in 1976, replaced Pat Metheny in Gary Burton's quartet, and then spent nearly a decade with Miles Davis, leaving in 1985 after releasing Electric Outlet. In the 90s, he put together a quartet with Joe Lovano and released A Go Go in 1997, and later leaned further into funk and soul jazz with Uberjam in 2002 and Up All Night in 2004. He also jammed with Medeski, Martin and Wood on Out Louder in 2006. Electrospective looks back at those years, drawing on tunes from the Blue Matter, Uberjam, and A Go Go bands, and mixing them with new material written in the same vein.
The band he's bringing with him gathers a few of his former collaborators. Adam Deitch is a funk drummer from Lettuce who's played with Scofield before. Larry Goldings is known for Scary Goldings and his work with James Taylor. Oteil Burbridge has played with Dead & Co., Tedeschi Trucks, and the Allman Brothers. Together they're revisiting that fusion-groove sound Scofield has spent years refining.
