Live show by St. Louis ensemble Jawwaad Spann & The Vintage Society, blending jazz, hip-hop, soul and R&B at The Dark Room.
Jawwaad Spann & The Vintage Society play The Dark Room on Saturday, October 24, their home turf here in St. Louis. The ensemble is led by Jawwaad Spann, a saxophonist, producer, and multidisciplinary creative born and raised in the city, with roots on the West Side. His approach holds onto the jazz tradition while pulling in hip-hop, soul, and a modern perspective, and the group moves freely between those styles—jazz, hip-hop, R&B, and soul—rather than sticking to one. Spann describes the sound as "Black Ivy League refinement with West Side soul."
He's worked with a wide range of names across the scene. He's shared stages with Wynton Marsalis, Jazzmeia Horn, Keyon Harrold, and Casey Benjamin, and he produces for artists like Mick Jenkins alongside St. Louis collaborators including Blvck Spvde, Katarra, Brady Lewis, We Are Root Mod, and Kudda. That mix of jazz roots and hip-hop production is exactly what you'll hear from the band.
The show is at The Dark Room, 3610 Grandel Sq., an award-winning live music and art venue run by the Kranzberg Arts Foundation at The Grandel. The room pairs live performances with rotating photography exhibits that celebrate the sights and sounds of St. Louis, and it houses The Gallery, a contemporary art space showing work by emerging and acclaimed photographers from the city and beyond. If you arrive early, there's usually something to look at on the walls before the music starts.
