Double bill of two silent films based on Edgar Allan Poe stories, part of an all-day Poe-a-thon at Arkadin Cinema & Bar.
Arkadin Cinema & Bar is dedicating Halloween to Edgar Allan Poe this year. On Saturday, October 31, they're running a Poe-a-thonβnearly 12 hours of Poe adaptations, from avant-garde silents to stone-cold classics, plus three films starring St. Louis horror icon Vincent Price. The whole day is billed as a tribute to Poe, the 'granddaddy of horror.'
One of the afternoon slots is a silent double bill: The Fall of the House of Usher (1928) and The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar (1936). Usher was directed by French Impressionist Jean Epstein and co-written by Surrealist Luis BuΓ±uel. Roger Ebert once described it as less fiction than the realization of a phantasmagoric alternative reality. It's paired with The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar, a twelve-minute Italian silent short based on Poe's story of a doctor's hypnosis experiment on a dying man.

If you're just coming for this double bill, it runs from 1:30 PM to 3:00 PM. Tickets are $5 each, and each screening is ticketed separately, so you'll need two for the pair. The cinema opens half an hour before showtime, and all ages are welcome.
