Drama written and directed by Paris Crayton III about three brothers whose love is tested by grief, addiction and the pressures of Black masculinity, with post-show talkbacks.
Brothers of Affliction opens at Greenfinch Theatre and Dive on Thursday, November 5, for a four-day run. It's written and directed by Paris Crayton III and presented by PC3 Productions and Nia B. Smith. The play is a drama about Black brotherhood and mental health, set right here in St. Louis, and it follows three brothers whose love is tested by the pain they carry—confronting mental health, trauma, and the pressures surrounding Black masculinity.
There's a personal history to this one. Crayton is a St. Louis native, and he wrote the piece when he was 28, though he says he only truly recognized its power after starting therapy ten years later. Since then, he's become an advocate for seeking mental health support. After productions in Atlanta and Los Angeles, this engagement brings the story back to the city where it was set and where Crayton was born and raised. Every performance is followed by a talkback with a mental health therapist, so the conversation continues after the curtain goes down.
