Tribute concert to Chuck Berry on what would have been his 100th birthday, with Valerie June, Robert Randolph, Eric Gales and the Berry family, at The Grandel.
Chuck 100 comes to The Grandel on Thursday, October 22, a tribute to what would have been Chuck Berry's 100th birthday. Berry was billed as the Father of Rock and Roll and was a favorite son of St. Louis, and his signature guitar riffs and songwriting were borrowed by nearly every major rock act from The Beatles and The Rolling Stones to Jimi Hendrix and Joan Jett.
The evening is being filmed by STL.org for a documentary about his life and legacy, due in 2027. For the night, The Grandel is transformed into Club Bandstand, Berry's groundbreaking 1950s St. Louis nightclub, through scenic design by Mikhail Lynn. Musical Director Steve Jordan, a Grammy-winning producer and Berry collaborator, was the backbone of the house band for Berry's 1987 Hail! Hail! Rock 'n' Roll concert project. Longtime Berry friend Joe Edwards hosts.
Jordan leads a large ensemble: Ivan Neville, Isaiah Sharkey, Joey Spampinato, Valerie June, Robert Randolph, Ally Venable, and Eric Gales. Joining them are Berry family members Charles Jr., Charles III, and Jahi Eskridge, and local artists Mattie Schell, Neil Salsich, and Brian Owens. It's a full band on stage rather than a single headliner, with the Berry family and St. Louis musicians sharing the bill.
