Free Sunday class for children who know how the pieces move, to learn the fundamentals of chess strategy and tactics with the club's Grandmaster in Residence.
Build on the Basics – Chess for Kids is at the Saint Louis Chess Club this Sunday, October 18, from 1 PM to 2 PM. It's a class for kids who already know how the pieces move and are ready to move past the basics into the fundamentals of chess strategy and tactics. The session is led by the club's Grandmaster in Residence, and it's run in a fun, interactive way to help young players learn how to think a few moves ahead and start winning more games.
If your kid is just starting out, this is part of a larger weekly kids' program the club puts on. There are sessions like 'Learn the Rules' for the absolute beginners and 'Train your Skills' for those moving up, along with scholastic tournaments. The club runs chess programming for players of all levels—everything from opening principles to deep endgame tactics—with beginner-friendly classes designed to build confidence, sharpen problem-solving skills, and grow a love for the game in a supportive environment.
Beyond the kids' side, there's plenty more going on. The club hosts exclusive sessions for women, competitive tournaments, lectures on game psychology, and master-level classes for advanced players. There are also Sunday Rated Games, a free, flexible US Chess dual-rated event. Whether you're looking for a casual way to get your child into the game or you're a serious player yourself, there's a place for you here.
