The St. Louis Symphony Orchestra performs Bruckner's Fourth Symphony with guest conductor David Danzmayr and bassoonist Andrew Cuneo, featuring a new bassoon concerto by Kevin Puts.
The St. Louis Symphony Orchestra brings Bruckner's Fourth to Powell Hall over two days: Friday, Feb 26, at 10:30 AM and Saturday, Feb 27, at 7:30 PM. Guest conductor David Danzmayr takes the podium for both, and the program pairs one of the great Romantic symphonies with a new concerto written for the orchestra's own principal bassoonist.
The main event is Anton Bruckner's Symphony No. 4, known as The Romantic. It's one of his most beloved works—sweeping, evocative, and deeply rooted in the Romantic tradition. If you're not familiar with Bruckner, this is a great place to start: it's expansive and melodic, with the kind of slow-builds and big payoffs that work best in a hall like Powell.
Before the symphony, the SLSO performs a new bassoon concerto by Kevin Puts, a longtime collaborator of the orchestra. This one is an SLSO co-commission, and it's performed by the orchestra's principal bassoonist, Andrew Cuneo. It's a rare chance to hear a member of the ensemble step out from the back of the section and take center stage.

Depending on which day you go, the experience changes. The Friday morning performance is part of the Coffee Concert Series, supported by EverTrue, and comes with complimentary morning refreshments. The Saturday evening concert leads into the SLSO's post-concert After Party, a relaxed, modern lobby hangout that doesn't require an extra ticket. Both the morning and evening performances run about two hours, including intermission.
