All-day Halloween Poe-A-Thon at Arkadin Cinema & Bar with three films starring Vincent Price, including 'The Fall of the House of Usher'.
Arkadin Cinema & Bar is spending Halloween on Edgar Allan Poe. On Saturday, October 31, they're running a Poe-A-Thon—nearly 12 hours of Poe adaptations, from avant-garde silents to stone-cold classics. The lineup features three films starring St. Louis' own hometown horror hero, Vincent Price, and two free events. Each screening is ticketed separately, so you can drop in for one or settle in for the whole day.
One of the centerpieces is The Fall of the House of Usher (1960), which runs from 5:00 PM to 6:30 PM. It's the film that kicked off a cycle of Poe adaptations that would go on to redefine American horror cinema. Exploitation maestro Roger Corman hired Price to play the mercurial Roderick Usher, and the result—written by Richard Matheson and shot in Floyd Crosby's stylish widescreen—is anchored by Price's anguished conviction in one of his signature roles. It's been described as a hallucinatory swirl of a movie that has the feel of an especially sharp nightmare.

That's just one part of the day. The full Poe-A-Thon spans nearly 12 hours, with Usher sitting alongside other Poe adaptations and two free events. Price appears in three of the films, and since he's a St. Louis native, seeing him on screen here on Halloween feels right. If you're only coming for The Fall of the House of Usher, it runs from 5:00 PM to 6:30 PM at Arkadin Cinema & Bar; tickets are $9.
