The St. Louis Symphony Orchestra performs works by George Walker, Samuel Barber and Beethoven's Pastoral Symphony, with soprano Julia Bullock.
The St. Louis Symphony Orchestra brings Beethoven's Pastoral: Reflections of Home to Powell Hall on Friday, Oct 30, and Saturday, Oct 31. Stéphane Denève conducts, with soprano Julia Bullock on the program.
The concert pairs Beethoven's Symphony No. 6 'Pastoral' with George Walker's Folksongs for Orchestra and Samuel Barber's Knoxville: Summer of 1915. The whole thing is framed around the sensations of a summer day: the sun's warmth on a front porch, a nearby stream, and a summer storm. Bullock, a St. Louis native and 2024 Grammy winner for Best Classical Solo Vocal Album, sings the Barber piece—a poignant, brooding reverie on childhood—alongside the Beethoven.

There are two ways to catch it. The morning performance is part of the SLSO's Coffee Concert Series, presented by the Whitaker Foundation and supported by EverTrue. It starts at 10:30 AM on Friday, Oct 30, and runs about an hour and 40 minutes, including intermission. That one comes with an after-party lobby hang that doesn't require an extra ticket. If mornings aren't your thing, there's a second performance on Saturday, Oct 31, at 7:30 PM. Both are at Powell Hall.
