The Wooden Boat Trade Association returns to the Southampton International Boat Show from 18 to 27 September, bringing handcrafted boats back to the waterfront for ten days. It's a presence they've maintained for more than 30 years, and the format stays the same: a collection of wooden boats on display and the boatbuilders who made them there to talk about their work.
If you've never come across them, the association supports boatbuilding across the UK, and their spot at the show has long served as a showcase for the skills and heritage of the trade. The boats on display are handcrafted, and the people behind them are on hand to talk through how they're built. It's less about browsing a catalogue and more about seeing the actual craft up close.
Alongside the boats, there'll be talks and demonstrations throughout the run, so it's not just a static exhibition. You can watch the work being done and hear from the people doing it, rather than just looking at the finished result. It's the kind of thing that works better when you're standing right there next to the boats.
