Guided art tour with Tim Craven exploring 19th-century Romanticism and Revolution artworks within the Southampton City Art Gallery.
Tim Craven leads a guided tour of the Southampton City Art Gallery on Wednesday 11 November, from 11am to 12pm. The session is called Romanticism and Revolution - 19th Century Art, and it's part of Tim's Gallery Tours, the gallery's series of art-historical walking tours led by their own guides.
Craven is an artist and a former curator of the gallery, so he knows the collection inside out. He'll take you up close to the fine art on the walls and talk through the context that led to the artworks' creation and the lives of the artists who painted them. This particular tour focuses on the 19th century, with Romanticism and Revolution as its theme. It's a good way to see the collection with someone who can actually explain what's going on in the frames rather than just reading the labels.
If you're not familiar with the wider series, each tour takes a different era as its theme, running from Van Dyck's seventeenth-century portraits through to the explosion of shape and colour of the 1960s and the present day. They're all part of the gallery's 'Weekday Wonderings' programme, which brings together talks and activities during the week. The gallery itself has recently reopened after a major upgrade, so it's a decent time to head back in.
