Screening of Jonathan Glazer's film 'The Zone of Interest', about the Höss family's domestic life next to Auschwitz, at Harbour Lights Picturehouse.
The Zone of Interest is screening at Harbour Lights Picturehouse on Sunday 18 October, with the film starting at 8pm. It's a heavy one, and not the kind of thing you'll walk away from in a hurry.
The story follows Rudolf Höss and his wife, who're working to build a dream life for their family in a house and garden that shares a wall with Auschwitz. The whole thing turns the banality of their domestic ambition into a chilling portrait of the Holocaust, and it's that contrast — the quiet, ordinary family life on one side of the wall and what's happening on the other — that does the heavy lifting. It's a film that asks you to look at the space between the two, and it doesn't let you off the hook.
Harbour Lights is a two-screen Picturehouse cinema and bar in Ocean Village, overlooking the Southampton marina. They run a broad programme, everything from current blockbusters and family favourites to independent gems, cult classics and world cinema, so this sits right in their wheelhouse. There's also a membership scheme that gets you free cinema tickets, food and drink discounts and no booking fees, which is worth keeping in mind if you're a regular.
