A beginner-friendly songwriting workshop to explore ideas, emotions, lyrics and melody in a supportive space. No previous experience is required.
God's House Tower is hosting a songwriting workshop called How To Hear Yourself on Sunday 23 August, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM. It's a beginner-friendly session that turns ideas, emotions, memories and experiences into songs, and you don't need any previous experience to take part. You don't have to be a singer or a musician, either — a song can start with a lyric, a feeling, a memory, a melody or just an idea.
The workshop walks you through the building blocks of songwriting: song structure, lyrics, melody, storytelling and creative expression. From there, it guides you from finding inspiration to writing lyrics and exploring how words connect with music. There are exercises to develop a personal song concept using creative prompts, and a chance to experiment with lyrics and melody and discover what makes a song memorable. It's open to anyone aged 16 and over, whether you've never written a song before or you're looking to reconnect with your creativity.

The setting adds its own chapter to the afternoon. God's House Tower is an award-winning arts and heritage venue in the heart of Southampton's historic Old Town, home to contemporary art, history and heritage, with a cafe and bar serving locally sourced food and drink on site. The workshop runs from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM on Sunday 23 August, and it's free to attend.
