Music in the City 2026

Music in the City returns to Southampton City Centre on Saturday 12 September, a free multi-venue community music festival that's now in its 18th year. It's been running since 2008 and has grown into one of the largest free festivals of its kind in the UK, taking over the city centre for the day.

What makes it work is how it uses the city itself. Instead of one big stage, the music is spread across a wide range of spaces: restaurants, pubs, shops, historic vaults, cultural sites, and outdoor areas. You end up hearing live music in places you'd normally just walk past, and because it's all across the centre, you can drift from one venue to another throughout the day.

The festival is run by local volunteers and focuses on grassroots music. It gives professional stage experience to emerging musicians at early career stages and artists from under-represented backgrounds, who play alongside established local acts, youth musicians, and community choirs. It's a broad mix of talent from across the city, and the whole thing is free to attend.

Beyond the music, it's a community event that brings people together across Southampton and drives footfall to local businesses. It's a one-day affair on Saturday 12 September, and since it's free, you can make your own way around the city centre and catch as many acts as you fancy.
