Baz Luhrmann's award-winning musical comes to the Mayflower Theatre for a month-long run, bringing the iconic film to life on stage.
Moulin Rouge! The Musical is coming to Mayflower Theatre from 24 September to 24 October 2026, a month-long run that marks the show's first-ever world tour. It's Baz Luhrmann's award-winning stage adaptation of his film, which takes the story to the stage as a musical mash-up.
The plot is set in Paris, 1899, and follows Christian, a lovesick American writer, and Satine, the dazzling star of the Moulin Rouge nightclub. Their romance is thwarted by the club's host, Harold Zidler, and the Duke of Monroth, and the whole thing comes together with the help of Toulouse-Lautrec and the tango dancer Santiago. The production is built around the themes of Truth, Beauty, Freedom and Love, and it features over 70 iconic songs woven throughout.
Behind the scenes, it's a big-name team: directed by Tony Award winner Alex Timbers, with a book by Tony Award winner John Logan, choreography by Sonya Tayeh and music supervision by Justin Levine. The show has picked up ten 2021 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, as well as an Olivier Award, two Drama League Awards, five Drama Desk Awards and ten Outer Critics Circle Award Honor citations. Casting for the Southampton run is still to be announced.
