Artist-led tour of the While We Slumber exhibition with Kitt, followed by a Q&A session with Kitt and Mia Delve.
Kitt is leading a tour of her exhibition While We Slumber at God's House Tower on Sunday 11 October, starting at 2pm. The tour is followed by an informal Q&A with Kitt and Mia Delve, the curator and programme manager at 'a space' arts.
While We Slumber is a public art commission by 'a space' arts for the tower, a sensory exploration of how social sleeping deepens emotional connection and reshapes our understanding of care, intimacy and belonging. At its heart is Kitt's idea of 'emotional heritage' — the way feelings accumulate within buildings and are passed on through the communities that inhabit them. At God's House Tower, this is layered with a history of communal slumber: from incarceration in the 1700s and 1800s to more recent artist residencies and a 24-hour ukulele jam.
Kitt, who also goes by Lady Kitt, is a disabled sculptor. She describes her practice as 'Mess Making As Social Glue', driven by curiosity about the social functions of art and shaped by a semi-nomadic childhood in which she received no formal education until age 14. The venue itself is a 700-year-old building in Southampton's Old Town, built on the orders of Edward III after a French raid in 1338. The tour gives you a chance to walk through the work with the artist herself, and the Q&A afterwards is a good spot to ask questions about the project and the ideas behind it.
