Art School Plus: Printing

Art School Plus: Printing is at Southampton City Art Gallery on Thursday 6 August, a full-day workshop for young people aged 11 to 16. It's part of Art School Plus, a programme of free courses for young people run by Southampton Cultural Services, and this particular session is all about printmaking.

The day starts with a walk through the gallery, where the group draws inspiration from the collection before spending the rest of the session learning and creating their own artworks. They'll work through a range of printing techniques, including gelli plate, mono and press printing, so you get to try a few different ways of making prints in one go rather than sticking to just one. It's a proper making day, not a quick taster.

The gallery itself is on Commercial Road in the city's Cultural Quarter, and it's been there since 1939. It's free to enter and sits right next to SeaCity Museum, and it pulls in art lovers, curious amateurs and families alike with exhibitions and permanent collections that run from painting, sculpture and drawing to photography and film, alongside gallery trails and monthly art clubs. The workshop takes place within that setting, so the morning walk through the galleries is built right into the process.

It runs from 10.30am to 3.30pm, and it's for 11 to 16 year olds. You'll need to bring a packed lunch and a drink, and there's a registration form sent by email to complete ahead of the day. The cost is £26.00.
