Interactive exhibition on pregnancy and early life as part of the British Science Festival, making its European debut.
Art of Creation is coming to the John Hansard Gallery from 18 to 20 September, making its European debut as part of the British Science Festival. It's an interactive exhibition that looks at pregnancy and the earliest stages of life, and it's taking over Galleries 2 and 3 at 1142 Above Bar Street.
The show grew out of artist residencies at Canadian research labs and was created by McMaster University in collaboration with the Art Gallery of Hamilton. The University of Southampton curated this run, framing it around how genetic, environmental and societal factors shape community health. It's part of a four-part creative series on lifelong health, and it treats art as a way to translate complex developmental science for a general audience.
Underneath it all is the work of Professor David Barker, who first put forward the idea that early development determines lifelong health. That's the foundation of what's now known as the Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DOHaD). Since that framework actually originated in Southampton, the university describes the exhibition as closing an important circle. Alongside the main display, there are drop-in sessions where the team explains the science of early life origins and guides visitors through creative activities.
