Facilitated writing session by The Writers Workshop on motherhood, open to mothers and writers of all levels.
Writing Motherhood is a writing session running at Orchard Square on Friday 23 October, from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. It's run by The Writers Workshop, a Sheffield nonprofit social enterprise that builds its programme around community, creativity, craft and careers for writers of all backgrounds, with a particular focus on generating ideas and exploring personal stories in both fiction and nonfiction.
The session is open to anyone who identifies as a mother or simply wants to write about mothers, and it suits novices and seasoned writers alike. The starting point is a provocation by Jacqueline Rose: 'Motherhood is the place in our culture where we lodge, or rather bury, the reality of our own conflicts... it is the secret knowledge that they share.' From there, you'll have the space to work through your own ideas and stories, whether you're coming at it from a personal place or just an interest in the subject.
Facilitating the morning is Coco Lone Neal, a mother, rambler, writer and once-upon-a-time archaeologist whose work has appeared in The Guardian, The Clearing, Caught by the River and Motherlore Magazine. She'll be there to guide the session and help you get something on the page, so it's a good spot to start if you've been wanting to write about this but haven't quite known where to begin.
