Guest concert by singer, harpist and composer Rachel Newton, with a singing session, in Fay Hield's monthly Wild Traditions series.
Rachel Newton plays The Gathering Ground in Hillsborough Park on Saturday 7 November, as part of the Wild Traditions series. It's a singer, harpist and composer's night, and Newton is the only act on the bill.
Wild Traditions is a monthly night run by Fay Hield that pairs a guest concert with tunes and singing sessions in an intimate room with no PA. Each night follows a set format: two 40-minute sets from the guest act, bookended by a House Song, and closing with a singing session where you can bring your own songs or join in. There's a House Tunes book available for anyone who wants to learn the tunes in advance, and a bar serves alcohol and soft drinks.
Newton draws on poems, ballads and stories hundreds of years old, working them into a contemporary compositional style to create a rich, ambitious and original sound. She's toured internationally with projects including The Furrow Collective and The Lost Words: Spell Songs, and was named Musician of the Year at both the Scots Trad Music Awards and the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards.
