Facilitated therapeutic and expressive writing group for adults, with no previous writing experience needed, run by The Writers Workshop.
The Writers Workshop are running a therapeutic creative writing session called Keeping the Fire Burning at Orchard Square on Thursday 5 November, from 6:30pm to 8:00pm. It's an in-person group in Sheffield city centre, and it's open to adults aged 18 and over. You don't need any previous writing experience to join in.
The session is facilitated by Emma Garrard, a biblio/poetry therapist with over 20 years' experience. It's an informal, friendly space with no more than eight participants, so it stays small and quiet rather than feeling like a class. The writing is the tool here, and sharing what you've written is always optional — you can keep your work to yourself if that's what feels right. To get things moving, Garrard uses prose excerpts, poetry, images and other prompts to help deepen self-awareness, self-understanding and self-connection, with the writing as a way of emotional expression and illumination.

If you're new to the group, there's a free 20-minute introductory Zoom call available before you join, so you can talk through emotional safety in the group and see if it's the right fit for you. On the night, paper and pens are provided, so you don't need to bring your own. The session runs from 6:30pm to 8:00pm at Orchard Square, 14 Orchard Square, Sheffield City Centre, S1 2FB, and costs between £15 and £18. The Writers Workshop is a Sheffield nonprofit social enterprise on a mission to enable everyone to experience the joy and power of creative writing, both at its venue and online, and members get a discount on events. The group also runs online on the first Sunday of the month, 4:30pm to 6:30pm via Zoom.
