World-premiere stage adaptation of Sunjeev Sahota's novel, directed by Elizabeth Newman and presented in association with Ranga Shankara.
The Year of the Runaways runs at the Crucible from Saturday 5 June to Saturday 26 June 2027. It's a world-premiere stage adaptation of Sunjeev Sahota's award-winning novel, brought to the stage by Sheffield Theatres in association with Ranga Shankara.
The story follows Narinder Kaur, who leaves her father's home to journey alone to Sheffield. Once here, her life becomes intertwined with three young men who arrived illegally from India and are seeking hope and a better life. As desperation bites, the characters learn that you can never fully run away from your past. It's a story about displacement, the search for a new start, and the things that follow you regardless of how far you travel.
Behind the scenes, the production is directed by Elizabeth Newman, with the adaptation handled by playwright Stephanie Street. The collaboration between Sheffield Theatres and Ranga Shankara is one the company describes as rooted in exchange, learning and shared ambition. It's a world premiere, so this is the first time the book has been staged.
