Sci-fi horror show by Thunder Road, with illusions, projections and jump scares, about a haunted space ranger and a failing ship.
Thunder Road bring their sci-fi horror The Void to Drama Studio on Wednesday 4 November, from 20:00 to 22:00. It's a production they've put together in association with Watford Palace Theatre, and it's part of their biggest tour to date — 16 venues across England and Scotland with Arts Council England support.
The story is set eight million miles from Earth aboard the Odyssey, an ageing research vessel gripped by a nightmare. It follows a haunted space ranger who finds a failing ship, a missing crew, and a deadly force running out of control. Writer and director Ryan Simons, who also worked on Kes, describes his aim as trapping the audience inside a horror film without them ever leaving the theatre. Cast member Alex Moran, known from War Horse, calls it a unique blend of film and live theatre.
That blend comes from the way the show is built. It leans on powerful illusions, atmospheric projections, and jump scares to drive the dread, and it weaves those scares around questions about artificial intelligence, surveillance, and human memory. It's the kind of thing that works best in a theatre: the projections and illusions are happening right in front of you, and the jump scares land differently when you're in the room rather than watching on a screen.
