A talk exploring the history of Greek mythology with a Q&A, by Dr Shelby Judge.
Dr Shelby Judge is taking the stage at the Sheffield Students' Union Concourse on Tuesday 24 November, with a talk titled The History of Greek Mythology: From Mount Olympus to modern. It's a broad sweep of a subject, tracing those old stories from their origins on the heights of Mount Olympus right through to how they still show up in the world today.
If you've only ever known the basics — Zeus, Hera, and the usual pantheon — this is a chance to see where those figures actually come from and how they've shifted over time. The talk doesn't just stick to the ancient world; it follows the thread into the modern era, so you'll get a sense of how these myths have survived and changed rather than just hearing them as static relics of the past. It's the kind of thing that works as well if you're a complete beginner as it does if you've spent years dipping into the classics.
There's a Q&A after the talk, which is the best bit of these nights. Once Dr Judge has laid out the history, you can step in with your own questions, whether you're curious about a specific myth or wondering why we're still talking about these stories thousands of years later. It turns the whole thing into a conversation rather than just a lecture, and it's usually when the most interesting bits come out.
