Ken Russell's 'The Devils' returns in a 55th anniversary 4K restoration, the first publicly released version as intended by the filmmaker, rated 18.
The Devils is coming to Showroom Cinema on Friday 30 October, and it's a bit of a moment. It's Ken Russell's landmark film returning in a 55th anniversary 4K restoration, and this isn't just a tidy-up of the picture. It's cut to Russell's own direction, described as the first publicly released version as intended by the filmmaker. The film was censored for more than half a century, so for most of us, this is the first time we'll see it the way it was meant to be.
Set in 17th-century France, it follows a charismatic priest whose unorthodox views and political resistance land him on the wrong side of power. From there, it opens up into a wider look at the collusion of church and state, told through religious persecution, collective hysteria and institutional corruption. It's a heavy subject, and the film doesn't shy away from it.
On screen, you've got Oliver Reed and Vanessa Redgrave in the leads. Behind them is a crew of heavyweights: cinematography by Academy Award-winner David Watkin, editing by Michael Bradsell and production design by Derek Jarman, whose work here marked his feature film debut. The restoration was unveiled at the 79th Cannes Film Festival, 55 years after the original release, and it's that same version that's coming to Sheffield.
