Sensoria Festival screens the cult anime classic Tekkonkinkreet in a 20th Anniversary 4K restoration, with live audio-visual performance by Plaid.
Tekkonkinkreet comes to the Drama Studio on Friday 23 October, as part of Sensoria Festival 2026. It's a 20th anniversary screening of the 2006 anime, presented by Sensoria in association with Reel Steel, and it's being shown in a 4K restoration. The film is in Japanese with English subtitles.
If you're not familiar, Tekkonkinkreet is a cult anime based on Taiyo Matsumoto's manga. It follows two street orphans, Black and White, who spend their days defending the decaying metropolis of Treasure Town from local gangs, the Yakuza, real-estate developers, and other-worldly assassins. It was produced by Studio 4°C and marks the debut directorial feature of Michael Arias, who co-produced The Animatrix and worked on Studio Ghibli's Princess Mononoke. The score is by Plaid, who share the Warp Records stable with Boards of Canada and Aphex Twin.

The screening is part of Sensoria Festival 2026, and the venue is the Drama Studio, an intimate 177-seat theatre owned by the University of Sheffield. It's housed in the former Glossop Road Baptist Church, which opened in 1970 and still retains much of its original architectural detail; it's Grade II listed and run by the university's Performance Venues department. The session runs from 6:30 pm to 8:45 pm, and entry is free.
