Adult storytelling evening by Graeme Cooke on British and Irish faerie folklore, with music by Alice Nicholls.
Graeme Cooke brings Tales of the Faeries: Lust, Loss and Hollow Hills to Shakespeare's on Wednesday 11 November, an evening of storytelling for adults drawn from British and Irish folklore and myth. Cooke is the host of the Tales of Britain and Ireland podcast, and the show takes that same material — the stories of the 'Good Folk' — and puts it on a stage.
The night is built around the faerie favourites: sex, violence and fiddle music, told with humour and the kind of wandering asides that make it feel more like a conversation than a recital. It's not a children's hour; the adult themes mean it's for ages 16 and over, and anyone 16 or 17 has to be accompanied by an adult. The Tales of Britain and Ireland podcast has been described as modern storytelling at its best — quirky, clever and accessible — and that's the same spirit he brings to the live set.
Rounding out the evening is music from Alice Nicholls, a Leeds-based multi-instrumentalist who started as a classical violinist and moved into dark folk. She'll be providing the music that runs alongside the stories, so the fiddle isn't just a mention in the description — it's a proper part of the night.
