Self-guided audio walking tour by AudaTours that turns a walk through Sheffield into a story across 15 landmarks, starting at the Crucible.
Steel City Through Time: A Sheffield Sound Odyssey kicks off at the Crucible Theatre on Sunday 25 October, a self-guided audio tour that turns a walk through the city centre into a story. It's put together by AudaTours, and instead of a guide leading you around, you take the lead yourself.
The tour runs for about an hour and a quarter, covering around 2.8 km of pavement across 15 landmarks. There's up to 38 minutes of narration to listen to as you go, so you're never without a voice in your ear for long. It starts at the Crucible Theatre and takes you past the lost Sheffield Castle, the Cathedral Church of St Marie, Tudor Square and Paradise Square. The pitch is deliberately un-plaque-like: ruined castles sleeping under busy streets, rebels whispering in cathedral shadows, and the scandals that once erupted in places like Paradise Square.
It's designed for solo travellers, couples, families and small groups who prefer to explore at their own pace. There's no in-person guide to keep up with, and you won't be going inside any of the buildings along the route, so it's a proper outdoor stroll. Tickets arrive as a redemption code by email for the free AudaTours app, and the tour works entirely offline once you've downloaded it, which means you don't have to worry about signal dropping out as you move through the city.
