Self-guided audio walking tour with 15 stops across Sheffield, starting at the Crucible Theatre and downloaded to a smartphone for offline use.
Steel City Through Time: A Sheffield Sound Odyssey kicks off at the Crucible Theatre on Friday 6 November, and it's not a show in the usual sense. It's a self-guided audio walk delivered by AudaTours, so instead of sitting in a seat, you're out on the streets. The whole thing runs from 12:00 to 20:00, which gives you plenty of room to take your time rather than rushing through it.
There's up to 38 minutes of narration spread across 15 stops, and you'll cover around 2.8 kilometres of pavement. It starts at the Crucible and takes you past the ruins of Sheffield Castle, the Cathedral Church of St Marie, Paradise Square and the Company of Cutlers in Hallamshire. The narration is built around the history, scandals and detail hidden behind the city's stone façades, so it's as much about the stories as it is about the sights. Because you're in charge of the pace, it works for solo walkers, couples, families and small groups who'd rather explore on their own terms than follow a guide on a fixed departure time.

Logistically, it's straightforward. Tickets arrive as a redemption code by email, and you download the tour to your smartphone to use entirely offline, so you don't have to worry about signal dropping out as you move through the city. It's £4.99, and since it's self-guided, you can start whenever suits you between midday and 8 pm.
