A self-guided audio walking tour exploring the hidden history of Sheffield's landmarks, starting at the Crucible Theatre and covering 15 locations across the city.
Steel City Through Time: A Sheffield Sound Odyssey is a self-guided audio walk by AudaTours that starts at the Crucible Theatre (55 Norfolk Street, S1 1DA) and takes in 15 landmarks across about 2.8 km. It's designed to uncover the hidden history behind Sheffield's stone façades, set against the city's steel and glass.
Among the stops are the Cathedral Church of St Marie, the site of Sheffield Castle, Tudor Square, the Company of Cutlers in Hallamshire and Sheffield Old Town Hall. There's no in-person guide and no fixed start time, so you can set off whenever suits you. You get a redemption code by email and run the tour through the free AudaTours app, which works offline once downloaded.
The narration runs up to 38 minutes, and the whole walk can take as long as you like. The organisers pitch it as a way to learn what desperate act triggered a siege at Sheffield Castle, who vanished beneath the cathedral's flagstones during a midnight storm, and why a political scandal erupted over an oddly painted window in Paradise Square. It's a good one if you're already out in the city centre and fancy a bit of local history on the side.
